Forebodings and Revelations

1996 to 1997

Players: Malcolm, Tim, Neil, Geoff, Jake, David, Chris, Indran

Introduction : Incident at the Merchants House

A gem is stolen, we must recover it. The gem was fake anyway (but a good fake), but we try to make a fake copy of that and hand it back. We're sussed.

Belltath’s Castle (8 Weeks)

Hired to take some beer to the dodgiest place in the country (Medham) by the brewer, Meledd.  Nearby to Medham is the local undead infested tomb, with matching castle.  The party go in kill things, come out.  Whiteflight stole an important gem here, which used to belong to the elves.  Lose lots of party members (leaving one there to die to the hands of a sadistic ogre) and give everything (including a magical dagger, not the gem) to the Paladins of Issiad. We don't realise it, but they are disguised clerics of Mallus. We get the necromantic ring at some point.

Maerdan, who'd lost both arms to the ogre was killed, mercifully, by his own adventuring party.

At the castle the group rescue Trenog, a 7' 6" minotaur wizard who had been tortured in the waterfall. They then bought him some clothes and a double headed axe bigger than he was.

The Monastery (8 Weeks)

Having done such a good job, we're hired again to deliver beer to the Monastery of Chosen Light, plus to transport an unwiling novitiate, Yimuradict; who is kidnapped upon delivery. We try to track him down, following goblins who stole him.  Find a lair in a cave and track to an underground river, where a Viking nar is resting, holding Yimuradict captive.  THe goblins turn out to be well trained.  The nar is crewed by Barbarians of the White Forest, who beat up the party and so we flee.  At this point, Corwin falls in love with Allaveer.  Yimuradict remains their hostage.  Also in the cave is the delightful, if anti-social, Rumag. This naga lords it over us 'cos we're only first level and suggests to Whiteflight that he'll look after his spell books whilst Whiteflight goes to fetch the Bone ring from his companions.  Or he'll kill him.  Seemed a fair deal to the bard, but when he tries to explain it to the others they don't agree.  The bone ring is then stolen by The Grey Claw - female elven mage/thieves.  So we go back and kill the naga.  Silanus the mage blows up Whiteflight's spell book, which the naga had kindly trapped for him. So then the priest Zelda finds another spell book.  Ignoring the loud, and frankly unnecessary warnings, he opens this too, only to be blown up, this time burning the beautiful Whiteflight and scarring him.  The priest somehow dies on his way out of the cave - Whitefight and Skarra drop him into a chasm.

Belltath’s Castle & Into Ravenloft (4 Weeks)

Th party is invited back for dinner! Wahay! Until the spirit of a hag (from the Grinyrach marsh) possesses Sir Vywren, one of the dinner guests. He dies, so does Mileesha (a mage), and the party volunteer to go through the nasty portal where undead are pouring out, and identify what is happening. In Ravenloft they meet a nice Vampire who insists the group get him The Memory of the Mountain, a 3 inch diamond with gold flex running through it. The group is therefore sent into

The House of Mazes (5 Weeks)

Discovered much later on, the party realise that in this place sane people are turned to stone. Due to a bureaucratic error, Whiteflight survives to rescue the party, befriending Rorke, a Wemic, on the way.  Rorke's insistance that he was a knight was evidence of his madness. Whiteflight here had read the Book of Peace and Love boosting his Charisma to outrageous levels but transforming him into a pacifist. When challenged to a duel by Rorke, Whiteflight offered him flowers and a chat. Kae'Esh determined that Whiteflight too was insane. Just as well as the only guidance the group were given for this place was yet another riddle:

Embrace the carved circle of trees

And cast unto the alien's body.

Taking the demon's name

May release through all or none.

Enter here the hearth servant's kitchen

Gateway to all the worlds.

Leave be the ship of fools

and dance not twice with the shining warrior.

No jester shall wear the sailor's suit

Cover the wisest fool with the breath of the trident.

They enter a maze, find 'Why', Kael's sword, find Kae'Esh, the domain Lord. They leave, not killing him, but lose Lokutus, a priest, who asked to be "closer to my god" when everyone else asked to leave with their one wish. Kae'Esh killed him.

Heronguard (3 Weeks)

There's 'another evil vampire' theme running in this plot too - why did none of us spot this (too many years playing with unimaginative DM's dulls your paranoia). Okay 'this time' it's a ravenloft style vampire taking his realm to another dimension 'cos he's so evil, and his kid sister, who moonlights as a ghost in the old abandoned church, asks us for help in prodding his buttocks. We go one step further and kick his ass. On the way a ring of pass without trace is acquired plus some nice chappies from Heronguard, like the guard captain, blacksmith (priest of Orath) and his wife. The MIB's running the town conform to all baddy fashion rules and kick in the locals periodically looking menacingly dressed like ninja wannabes. Rorke is killed by them trying to rescue Whiteflight from a building he isn't in. Such is life.

Belltath’s Castle & Out of Ravenloft

The party return to the castle with the Memory of the Mountain, and fight the vampire. Silanus dumps all the cash from his bag of holding to save a fellow party member. Hurrah we make it out. And yay there was much rejoicing.

The group gave information on the castle to Count Theranoth and Friar Bellas ( a priest of Mystrae) so they could recover the books and wine, although Theranoth's plan was to just take the castle and use it as a base for the Paladins of Issiad. A reaward of 1000 silver arun seems quite low value by comparison.

The Island of Kilios (4 Weeks)

Cool - it had a name! This is the one I call the jungle isle, with Ligren the friendly, but helplessly imprisoned fairy dragon Grand (almost) druid, who directs us to the isle of much-kicking-in-of-nasy-green-dragons, which probably isn't its real name either. But we met Alwin, the Green Lady's son. We killed him, lots of pregnant women, stomped on some eggs, and killed nine dragons. Sadly there was another and badly injured everyone in the party, except Whiteflight. Whiteflight agreed to kill Lord Quintith if it'd let him go. It was possessed by the Green Lady at the time and Whiteflight was happy to say anything that would get him out alive. It worked - you got healed/resurrected and we buggered off - Whiteflight through a teleport so the Wizards guild could question him about stolen objects, and the rest through plants and the plane of Allivea.

The Tournament at Vern (2 Weeks)

Whiteflight gets followers and the party get noticed big-style as we dress up and hit people in the name of entertainment. Kael is sponsored (sort-of) by Duchess Jekya and Corwin kicks butt elsewhere on the field, and nearly wins the archery. Sillanus finds out that the magic gem he grabbed in Ravenloft contains a huge dragon. The prize, a magical shield, is stolen by some nasty people. We're asked to get it back so we track down said thieves and retrieve the shiled. Then we're asked to find them again and exact retribution - this time for money (and a cure to the nasty curses we picked up in the nether worlds - Whiteflight smells of undead and Corwin and Skarra are bloodthirsty vampires - nearly) :o) Cool - who could refuse. Off we trot to find that they were hired by some priests of Mallus - and thus we must investigate..

The Abbey of Mallus (3 Weeks)

Fortunately we hear that at this time of year the Gon'wrath moors are delightful, and no-one has reported seeing dragons for quite some time. In fact most people who cross the marsh don't. That is they never make it across and so the dragons may have taken them all on holiday - you just never know. Thus we are fearless when we seek out the alleged Temple of Mallus somewhere on the Gon'wrath Moors and hire a most competent, if alcoholic guide to show us where it is. He shows us a shed. Or at least something fairly unconvincing on the Temple stakes. We go in and politely question the half-ogre priest who tells us he just sacrifices sheep and grows vegetables. All very nice. So we leave. Only joking we butcher him mercilessly and find the secret tunnel down to the real temple of Mallus, which looks more like a cathedral and is much more satisfying. We fight through the gnomish skeleton guards. Kill some priests and leave. Well most of us do. Whiteflight is killed stealing back the bone ring - and you had your chance then, remember that - but is kindly reincarnated as a dwarf by Silanus.

Enter the Dragon (5 Weeks)
Iggy meets some nice people about to cross the marsh. As he’s on his way home to Turse and it’s dangerous all alone he asks if they’d like some company. Sadly Skarra is on his way across the marsh to kill the big black dragon that killed his bit of stuff. Iggy joins in and after killing the nasty black dragon, and its mate, is so gloriously rich that he decides to sod going home but return to study more magic that he could have previously afforded. He also returns the crown of some dwarven king on the way ‘cos he’s nice like that. And before he goes he releases Klidmar, a young, black, vegetarian dragon, and promises to show him Nyr D’nar… The rest of the dragon’s lair is left open for Redweed Tharn and his jolly kingdom of gnomes to take over more gold than their surly dwarven cousins could ever dream of. The group makes lifelong friends with them! Weirdly, Radigund becomes popular because she can't carry as much loot as she'd like.

1997 to 1998

Players: Malcolm, Geoff, Jake, David, Chris, Indran & Matt then Claire

To Catch a Thief (6 Weeks)

Meledd the brewer received delivery of a single bottle of Fey Wine from the Larrowmor Forest. It was the first bottle out of the sylvan woods for over a century, from the personal stores of King Ortar. The wine was a huge boost for Meledd, who was already the major brewer in Lanmere, and would give him even greater credibility and social standing.  However, the wine was then stolen by the guards he had hired before it was due to be auctioned.
Its loss represents a huge blow to Meledd, and could have potentially damaging effects, not only to his reputation, but also to future trade with the Elven Kindom.
The group was hired to track and recover the bottle, within the eleven days before it is due to be auctioned. In return they will receive a percentage of the profits.  They locate the Lanmere Thieves’ Guild, based at the Witch-Hunter’s Blade, and raid it. The bottle is recovered, sold and the group gets its money.  The group butcher many thieves, presumably not making themselves too popular. The town guard ignore their revelation about the location of the Thieves’ Guild…

Also during this adventure:

Whiteflight wins a bet with Griss and is transformed from being a dwarf into a were-bear. The unfortunate side-affect of this is that he now looks more like his wanted posters. The group discover a secret entrance into Lanmere, through a tunnel in the wall.

Along the way they meet with Istfan the Grey, an enterprising wizard who is ripping off merchants.  Istfan is living in Orgal's Tower near Igmortum and after working out the magic lift, Whiteflight finds Orgals' study and spell book and the first ever primed scroll he's encountered - one that is cast upon reading.  The spell is Find Demonic Familiar and with it Whiteflight summons Kalarak.  Istfan had not looked upstairs in the tower – possible he couldn’t get there, to where Orgal kept his equipment.  He also used an illusory spell to attack Corwin but otherwise only cantrips.  He seemed to be a small time hustler, rather than a major threat, so they decided to leave him alone.  Instead, Whiteflight repays the merchant and the guards he'd sacked out of his own funds, overjoyed at his own success.

The Wizard's Guild didn't know about the tower and still might not, though Silanus was present.

The Inquisition (5, then 1 Week)

Sir Kayguard (twin brother to Sir Borli, of Merenbrook) is a knight in love but his feelings are not reciprocated. The lady of his love's desire is found hanged, and shortly after Sir Kayguard is found dead, eviscerated, and the organs are located in Corwin's backpack. Things do not look good. The Inquisition arrive and suggest that Corwin might be involved. Desite his protestations they decide to imprison (and torture?) him. The group runs off to find Kayguard's servant. Instead we find his body, as the Inquisition found him first. However, we are nothing if not resourceful and get the high priest to question him. It was he that committed the nefarious deed (acting on behalf of the girl's father - a knight, though we do not determine this from our questioning). The Inquisition are upset. They had hoped to implicate Corwin and the young Sir Isandr, whom had been accused of the murder of Sir Kayguard, after having challenged him earlier - believing him to be responsible for the lady's death (Isander being a friend of the lady's father). Instead of killing him directly he was supposed to have hired Corwin to perform the deed. And thus implicated the Inquisition would be justified in killing not only these two, but Isander's superior, and thus complicit abeter, Count Pheranoth, Head of the Palladins of Issiad. Now robbed of this opportunity, they no longer consider us to be friends.
Whiteflight was quite fortunate to have taken on his dwarvish form at this stage, as the Inquisition had arrived most specifically for him. The deadline by which he was to have killed Lord Quintith had passed and Whiteflight had achieved a highly sought after status. Occassional skirmishes between the groups saw Whiteflight take credit for all Inquisition deaths, as there was no need to place a bounty on the heads of all the party members. This culminated in the deaths of many Inquisition in an alleyway in Barrinder, but most notably with the deaths of 12 members of the Inquisition, and one Inquisitor, on the road to Towerford. For this last act we were fined one iron tick for littering the King's highway

The Box (2 Weeks)

Banerin, a hobbit, asks the group to rescue a man named Morliff who is trapped in a box/pocket dimension formed after the clerics of Tarrak fought a battle with the Circle of the Rat (this was the were-rat cult's temple in the pocket dimension). Banerin was the frontman for ArchBishop Rin’Sargif, High Priest of the Temple of Tarrak and head of the Wizards’ Guild.

Unhelpfully, to get into the box the PCs had to solve a riddle.

Fill the king with the last life of his kin.

Give death only to the final traitor

whilst blessing his fathers with the warmth of the hearth

Wash his body in their children's pain

and kiss him with the power of magic.

The box was 8 inches long with four low relief carvings of grotesque rats surrounding one deep relief carving of a grotesque rat holding a sceptre.

Their instructions were to bring back a goblet but nothing else and to rescue Morliff.  Morliff, turned out to be Sir Thinhaygen, Temporal Champion of the Knights of the Grey Order.  He'd been held prisoner for 60 years in the box dimension.  Once out, Morliff asked the party for help in tracking down his spell book, Fairbox.

After entering they fought a hydra summoned by the priests, then did battle with the rats. They had been told not to remove anything from the dimension.  Milo, however, tried to bring back a hydra's tooth as a trophy and was trapped there forever.

Brother Indran’s brother, Brother Krynn was one of the priests.  Indran and Milo kill Krynn ... The party kill all the rats, including the High Priest, Brother Martin, but save one girl, Erlain, and a knight, Morliff.  Whiteflight actually killed Erlain as she was a were-rat, but by taking her body out of the dimension with them, she was able to be resurrected by the priests, since she had been an innocent victim.  She now works for ArchBishop Rin’Sargif.

The Hunt (Side Trek with Jake & Geoff)

Duke Torman gets all buddy with the power rangers and invites them for some wilderness fun at his paintball lodge. Out on hunt, Corwin escapes from a Wyvern, though his squire Frenvic dies. corwin goes back to kill it, with reinforcements.
Duke Torman is kidnapped, and taken to Sir Borley's castle in Merrenbrook. We're guessing it's because as he's in charge of Rew, he'd know all the defensive strategies to be taken if a war with Turse were to start, plus it would weaken the Kursivalian position by leaving his post vacant, for any length of time. The party find him and rescue him, though DarkClaw, Sir Borley's green dragon finds the party and captures Whitefilght and Torman. Whiteflight persuades Darkclaw to take him and the Duke back to Rew. Some diplomatic negotiations that we weren't party to put off the possibility of a full-blown war for the immediate future

Evil Writings (10 Weeks)

Having rescued Morliff from the box,he the asked the party to locate and destroy an evil book.  Easier said then done - we eventually found it belonged to Glariand, a rather dodgy merchant. We set off a fire trap in Rew looking for the book, and luckily the blame fell on Glariand as 2 people, and seven horses died in the fire.  On the order of Duke Torman, we travel to Nyr'Danr, to find Glariand.  Eventually he's caught, and he tells us Halrun has the book.  Halrun is a priest of Lodos who worked for Duke Torman - by the time we return to Rew, Halrun has done a runner. We catch up with him, and interrogate him - and he tells us sir Kayguard has the book.  That evening we travel to Merrenbrook.  We fly in to the castle, and leave with it.  Whiteflight and Aspen escape via the astral plane, betting with Griss to leave.  Whiteflight wins, Aspen doesn't, and laughs ever after when in the middle of a battle.  We regroup - the book turned out to be Fairbox, Morliff's spell book, packed with Chronomancy spells and attitude (sentient, 10 hit dice). We finally destroyed it with weapons after a long time failing to disspell it.

Morliff’s spell book contained temporal magic, he’s given up using it now, but if it got into the wrong hands, the effects could be devastating.
Party begin to track down the book.
Morliff’s squire, Ulrin was killed by an assassin, The Raven
We discover the identity of The Raven, to be King Jismeg, of the Black Talon goblin clan.
In exchange for 6 Continual Light spells, Jismeg reveals he sold the books to a traitor within the castle… Halran
The book was then taken to Turse.
The group break into Merrenbrook, again, and steal the book. It appears that Sir Borlis, had gotten hold of it but had not been able to understand it, and rather than hand it over to the Green Lady herself, had kept it hidden.
Eventually we manage to destroy the book, by hitting it lots...
We confront the traitor, he flees, we kill him.

This scenario involved:

An incursion into Turse. These often verge on starting wars..
The destruction of Fairbox The identification of Jismeg, the Raven The unmasking of a traitor…?

Beginning of the End (5 Weeks)

This was Corwin's quest to destroy the bone ring. The ring was created by Aragorn, and allowed the wearer to raise and control undead creatures. Aragorn had lost the ring, and it had found it's way into Corwin's possession at the beginning of the adventure. The ring was then stolen by the Grey Glaw, and delivered back to a temple of Mallus on the Gonrath mors, from where the party had rescued it. Corwin was asked by Allaveer to destroy the ring, and there was a riddle with instructions.

It controls the dancers without partners,
And when the stacked corn burns the fallen stems rise.
In it's misty clasp is forever night.
The circle ends in the heart of a strong goddess.

Eventually the party interpreted the riddle, and Corwin delivered it to a holy place of Alleveer, a grove, where it was destroyed.

Skeletons from the Closet (1, then 3, then 3 Weeks)

This story starts four thousand years ago, when three events occurred. An evil elven necromancer named Bacchun enters a tomb of Lodos to raise dead dragons. Rohannan, a silver dragon dies, believing he is killed by his nephew Baephius, though he was really killed by Bachun. (He turns into a ghost.) And Baephius is said to go mad, and is sealed inside the tomb to die. We arrive at the temple, looking for the cause of a desecrated grove of Allaveer. There is a new vampire about - the village of Strinton is run by vampires, and the tomb has been opened again by Yimuradict. The snot-nosed brat the group allowed to be kidnapped slew the dragon he was taken by and has taken on a new calling of killing big, powerful things. The monastery was supposed to be the making of him...

Inside the tomb are Baephius, now a vampire/lich, Bacchun (a ghost), and Rohannan. The group venture into the tomb on many occasions, each time going slightly further, then coming out to heal up. They ran into Yimuradicthere - he killed the recent elven necromancer, whose body they destroy (Asrune, one of the villagers). In a fight Baephius and Rohannen kill Bacchun - although he resurrects, the PCs find where and so manage to kill him (Aspen was meant to do this, to get rid of his curse, though in the end someone else gets the final blow). They then attempt to kill Baephius, knowing that if he dies so will Rohannan.  Whiteflight, Kael and Brangwen die. Chryssiana and Corwen are rescued by Turgor, and Aspen was possessed by a necromantic sapphire - he went to Nyr'Danr, died and was resurrected there.
Corwen is asked to deliver a note for Pherenath - and ends up with Chryssiana, Yimuradict, our bodies and Aspen at Aeson's house where they are resurrected and all put to work for the King.

Clearing the Road (2 Weeks)

In between out to-ing and fro-ing with the temple of Lodos, Lanmere was besieged by Barbarians. They were about to batter down the door with a party member tied to the front of the battering ram, so we ventured out to rescue him (I think it was Aspen). Whilst sneaking around outside, we found that the Barbarians were in league with the Green Lady - and with Aragorn. To cut a long story short, there was a huge fight, and lots of people died. Ct Svalrik died too (Chryssania cunningly lassoed Kael off the wall, leaving Svalric to defend himself. Which he didn't.) To top it all off, Svalric's body was stolen by a demon of Mallus (it was later returned).

Dark Tidings

Kael and Rossenfur fight for Countship of Barrander.

In Too Deep (2 Weeks)

Journey to Blakmar

1998 to 1999

Players: Chris, Neil, Malcolm, Marc, Buff, Geoff, Claire, Ian & Indran

The letters

20th Reapers Harvest 1160

to whom it may concern
the letter Finds you at your greatest hour of need.   your courage and bravery has been noted by the many spies under my command.   few know my name and fewer Live to tell it.   what You seek has recently come to my attention and it is with gReat pleasure that i am able to reward your skill and determInation.   the path travelled is still dangerous and i must warn you to guard against those who would betray you to the evil tyrant who holds thEse sacred lands in his bony grasp.   beware my friend and may we meet soon at the pLace where the weeds are thick and the stones are fallen.
his most powerful and great excellency, the unnameable one

found at Castle Bramblewood

To My Most Ingenious And Admired Adversary,
I have gained some knowledge of which you will be most interested.   Through careful manoeuvring I have found the location of your Emperor Lucknar.   I know you are well aware of my position over the trivial nature of human affairs, but it is in both our interests to see the emperor freed from his human captivity.   Please see that this message is placed in the appropriate hands and not returned to the darker authority that rules our land.   The time of the reckoning is nigh and we must prepare ourselves for the final judgement of our god. His excellency is located in the lowest level of the deepest, most unpenetratable dungeon.   The entrance is in the first Way Tower between the town of Lethandor and the home of our most glorious mortal ally.
May our god have blessings upon this venture, and grant us mercy at the final call.
A friend.

25th Deadleaf 1160

For the attention of Bishop Chryssania and her fellows
I have recently learnt of your foolhardy attempt to overthrow the dark powers which rule this land. You have unknowingly caused my kind great harm with your short sighted deeds. It is time for you to make amends and show your true worth. The tyrant you seek to dispose must not have harm befall him. he is infinitely more valuable to the cause of justice with breath in his body. Kill all the servants you wish, but the white serpent circling the palace must not be slain. Instead, to appease my anger, you must introduce him to the traitor.
The Unnameable One

Robbing Hood (10 Weeks)

The group hear of a valuable cargo heading past the Kavil forest hideout, where we as outlaws under the rule of Aragorn, are based. We ambush it just on the Kursavalian, Tursen border and battle undead troops, a necromancer and Sir Pedigore in a new, not-improved, Skeletal Warrior state. The cargo includes three chests, the best of which contains a necromantic bone box, which we were unable to open. We carried this round with us for a while until we were all arrested and it was taken from us as we approached Blackmar. No positive effects from this one, but we did see 100 villagers executed whilst we were stubbornly refusing to hand it back. Plus we released 10 captives in a supposed trade-off that we double crossed them in. One of them was the Queen's contact, Hiren von Stankorst.
Cunningly enough, he was travelling to Blakmar to visit a darling long lost brother. Aspen told us about the previous party members who were captured in Blakmar, and off we set to rescue them, and deliver Hiren. Amazingly, we do, and are rewarded with the return of our characters.

Descending Evil (5 Weeks)

Fought Drow and Aspen died. We delved deep into the underdark to battle creatures with more legs than we had, in order to regain a suit of Armour containing the spirit of the warrior Roskann, the one person feared by Aragorn. Well, with such a prize we figured it was worthwhile, neglecting to remember that the drow, whom we were up against were a matriarchal society, leaving our spokespersons, if we were to be allowed any, as Radigan or Kurngrim. Iggy was all for topping himself there and then.
Anyway, we got there, got imprisoned, got shown the way out by a friendly back-stabbing elf. Got ambushed, lost Aspen , managed to butcher some elves and run for it. With the armour worn by one of the party members. Rescued by deep gnomes, we were grateful to see the surface again.

Sir Corwin’s Quest

Tolmart finding, Ferus goes to kill Aragorn

Yeah.. best not to ask how long this one lasted. Does anyone remember that ring from way back in 1996, second scenario… Oh, That ring!!! That’s the one. Well, Corwin’s Quest was to destroy this ring, and all he had to do was solve a simple riddle, in exchange for which he would be knighted into the service of his beloved Allaveer no less. And so, a mere three years game play later, the party stumbled across the idea of doing just that. The riddle was obviously quite simple:

It controls the dancers without partners,
And when the stacked corn burns the fallen stems rise.
In it's misty clasp is forever night.
The circle ends in the heart of a strong goddess.

And wouldn’t you know it, all that meant was place inside a tree for three days over a high holy day period, bring to a boil, simmer and stir until plot thickens…
Such an easy solution was obviously what we had been missing, and all it took was the deaths of many individuals and the excellent conflagration of a grove of Allaveer.
