Dice with Death

Player Character Losses

There have been many characters in the game and not all of them made it through alive. Some made it back from the dead and some just made it into the history books. This is a retrospective on some of those exits.

Belltath's Castle (Scenario 2)

Gunthor - Died 1154. Was poisoned and drowned in the moat of Belltath's Castle whilst trying to rescue Maerdan. Buried outside of the castle.

Robin - Died 1154. Poisoned and drowned whilst saving Whiteflight in Belltath's Castle. Whiteflight was only in trouble as he'd gone to save Robin and almost drowned. Fell into the water from a rope tied badly by Zelda.

Voth -  Died 1154. Peppered with arrows by undead archers outside Belltath's Castle. Charging was a poor plan.

Maerdan -  A mercy killing from the party after he'd been abandoned in Belltath's Castle. The group were badly injured and fled to regain health and recover. Maerdan had lost both arms to an ogre when they found him.

The Monastery (Scenario 3)

Elwin - Died 1154. Had his throat slit in a tunnel before he could regain consciousness in the caves of the naga Rumag.

Zelda - Died 1154. Killed whilst unconscious after blowing himself up with the transparently trapped spell book of the evil naga Rumag. His body was tied to a rope being lifted up a chasm by Whiteflight and Skarra but it swung into the rocks too many times.

Koijan - Died 1154. Fell down a 100' climb and died in the caves of the naga Rumag.

The House of Mazes (Scenario 5)

Although the entire party (excluding Whiteflight) were turned into statuary the heroic bard managed to save their lives.

Lokutus - Died 1154. Killed by the demon Kae'Esh who was granting wishes. Everyone else asked to leave his dimension. Lokutus asked to be "closer to my god".

The Island of Kilios (Scenario 8)

B'Elanna - Died 1154. Killed in an attack by a young green dragon on the jungle isle of Kilios after the party had slain the Green Lady's son Alwin and this half-dragon friends. Her body was left on the plain near the castle on Kilios.

Skarra - Died 1154. Killed in an attack by many green dragons on the jungle isle of Kilios after the party had slain the Green Lady's son Alwin and this half-dragon friends. Whiteflight made a deal with the Green Lady to resurrect his companions in exchange for which he would kill Lord Quintith. Whiteflight had no intention of keeping this deal and was hunted down by the Inquisition later on.

Silanus - Died 1154.

The Abbey of Mallus (Scenario 10)

Whiteflight Died 1154. He was killed on the Gon'Wrath Moors by demons after a fight in their temple where he killed the high priest of Mallus. Whiteflight was reincarnated as a dwarf by Silanus. His companions robbed his body. He took the name Kalos. His original body was buried on the moor. This was his second death.

Sir Perceval - Died 1154. Gored by a boar which woke up when the druid Skarra threw a rock at it. Perceval bled to death.

Brother Indran - Died 1155. Killed in a battle with Barbarians in the Siege of Lanmere.

The Box (Scenario 14)

Milo - Forgot the warning from the Wizard's Guild not to take anything from the were-rat's pocket dimension. He picked up a last minute trophy of a hydra's tooth before the portal to leave was opened. He couldn't leave. The dimension was then closed and destroyed.

Skeletons from the Closet (Scenario 18)

The Tomb of Bapheus: Large body count. Three PCs killed

along with Benash, the NPC priest of Allaveer.

Whiteflight - Died 1155. In his were-bear form ad travelling under the name Arndam, Whiteflight was killed by the frost breath of Bapheus, a dragon necromancer. He was resurrected later by his father Aeson after Yimuradict recovered his body. He was then commanded to join The Strange Company, taking on his identity as Whiteflight again. This is his third death.

Kael - Died 1155. Killed in Tomb of Bapheus. Killed in Tomb of Bapheus. Resurrected by Aeson after their bodies were recovered by Count Yimuradict. He was commanded to join The Strange Company, conducting secret missions for the king.

Brangwen - Died 1155. Killed in Tomb of Bapheus. Resurrected by Aeson after their bodies were recovered by Count Yimuradict. She was commanded to join The Strange Company, conducting secret missions for the king.

Aspen Darkfire - Died 1155. Possessed by a necromantic sapphire from the Tomb of Bapheus (stealing from the grave of a necromancer dragon), he travelled to Nyr'Danr and died there before being resurrected.

Robbing Hood (Scenario 22)

Taekmor - Killed 21st Longday 1160. The very annoying thief who stole from her own party as much as from anyone else. So good at sneaking Igelkordok didn't spot her in the midst of battle and caught her with a Fireball. It wasn't a noble death but it was a noble battle: against Pilus Prior Rattian Elf Slayer and his skeletal army at Rew.  The fireball took out 20 undead and 2 Decurians. Silanus reincarnated him.

Aspen Darkfire - Killed 21st Longday 1160. In the same battle against Pilus Prior Rattian Elf Slayer, Igelkordok managed to kill Aspen. This time by dropping a Sheet of Ice on his head. Aspen was a prisoner along with Nero and both were going to be executed. Misjudging their health, Iggy dropped the ice which killed 200 undead archers (as intended) but also his ally. Silanus reincarnated him but Aspen came back as a woman.

Taekmor - Killed 11th Early Summer 1160. Eighteen days after being reincarnated last, Taekmor was sold out to Aragorn. She tried to escape, hitting a guard and running but Qaisetor Rathlin of the Praetorian Guard killed her with a Lightning Bolt. This one is special as it's the first time a character has died twice in the same scenario.

Whiteflight Died 1156. Killed in a drunken brawl in Blackmar whilst on a secret mission, which he failed at. He was reincarnated by the goblin Nardik seeking a true heir to the goblinic throne. Goblin again but this time their king - Larenthug. His human/were-bear body would be on Blackmar, disposed of by the City Guard.

Descending Evil (Scenario 23)

Aspen Darkfire - Killed 3rd Midsummer 1160. Thirty eight days after being reincarnated, Aspen was taken hostage in the Drow city by Maelstrom Darmore. Maelstrom threatened to slit her throat if the party did not surrender. He kept his word when the party refused. His third and final death.

The Plan (Scenario 234)

Roan - Died 28th Freshyear 1167. Roan carried a keg of gunpowder to a corrupted sylvan tree. Knocked unconscious by shadow boars he was blown up when Sir Corwin (controlled by Marc at this point) loosed a fire arrow at it. It killed hundreds of undead pixies, the corrupt tree and a priest of Mallus. Only a tuft of his hair remains with Skarra. 220 points of damage were too much for the unconscious fawn. The group had known him for only five days.

Character of note

Whiteflight has had three in game deaths, matched only by Aspen Darkfire, though Whiteflight has come back again so retains the Yo-Yo King title, as well as being King of the goblins. Unfortunately their average life span is about 40 so he's rapidly approaching an end point that's harder to dodge. Of course that average may include factors such as propensity for wars and fighting, poor diet, low education and such, which Larenthug is keen to overturn.

Whiteflight the Gay Blade - "The Unflushable Turd" - Initiate Skarra

Despite his multiple identities and, at times, requirement to keep his identity hidden, his companions only ever referred to him as Whiteflight. Until he became a goblin at which point they distanced themselves from him quickly.

1) Died 1135. Larenthug was murdered as a baby (goblin) but reincarnated by his adoptive father, Aeson. Raised as a human, Whiteflight, unaware of his origin.

2) Died 1154. Whiteflight was killed on the Gon'Wrath Moors by demons after a fight in their temple where he killed the high priest of Mallus. Whiteflight was reincarnated as a dwarf by Silanus. His companions robbed his body. He took the name Kalos. His original body was buried on the moor.

 - changed to were-bear (going by the name Ardam) after bet with Griss

3) Died 1155. Arndam was killed by the frost breath of Bapheus, a dragon necromancer. He was resurrected later by Yimuradict to join The Strange Company, taking on his identity as Whiteflight again.

4) Died 1156. Whiteflight was killed in a drunken brawl in Blackmar whilst on a secret mission, which he failed at. He was reincarnated by the goblin Nardik seeking a true heir to the goblinic throne. Goblin again but this time their king - Larenthug. His body would be on Blackmar, disposed of by the City Guard.
